The Value of Design Thinking within the Collaborative and Course Creation Process

I’d like to begin by answering the questions, “What is Design Thinking and what value does it bring to the collaborative and course creation process?” The best description of Design Thinking I’ve found comes from Tim Brown, author of the book, Change by Design. He said, “Design Thinking taps into capacities we all have but that are overlooked by more conventional problem-solving practices. It is not only human-centered; it is deeply human in and of itself. Design Thinking relies on our ability to be intuitive, to recognize patterns, to construct ideas that have emotional resonance as well as functionality, to express ourselves in media other than words or symbols.”

Essentially, I collaborate with you to produce an end product using a thoughtful and customized approach to meet your needs using a combination of these design principals and techniques. From ADDIE to Gagne’s Nine Events, I use the best methodology to best suit your learner’s needs.

Sample Schedule of Tasks

As the Instructional Designer, I will lead a kick-off meeting and fill-out an initial intake form with the client. Next, the performance gap analysis will be conducted followed by interviews with high performing leaders. I will review the data and create a storyboard.  The storyboard will be reviewed by the SME and approved by the Client. I will develop the course Alpha from the approved storyboard. The Alpha will be submitted to the SME for review. I will produce the Beta version after the implementation of the Alpha comments from the SME. The Beta version is then reviewed by the SME to fine-tune any last-minute edits. After Beta edits are complete, the course will be ready for final Gold review and approval. Once the Client approves the Gold version, I will send the Storyline file to the HR Operations Team who will upload to the LMS for the implementation phase.
